IEC 60730-1 Annex H

IEC 60730-1 Annex H: Automatic Electrical Controls - Software Analysis

Official Documentation

Overview

IEC 60730-1:2022 Annex H provides requirements for software used in automatic electrical controls for household appliances and similar equipment. The standard defines Class A, B, and C software classifications with increasing safety requirements based on the severity of potential hazards. Annex H introduces Table H.2, which specifies fault/error control techniques for CPU, memory, clock, I/O, and communication components. The standard is widely referenced in energy storage systems (ESS) and battery management systems (BMS) through standards like UL 9540, UL 1973, and IEC 62619, which require Class B compliance for safety-critical protection functions.

Scope

Applies to automatic electrical control devices for use in, on, or in association with household and similar equipment. Annex H specifically addresses software safety requirements for controllers that incorporate programmable electronic components. Key applications include home appliances (refrigerators, washing machines, HVAC), battery management systems (BMS), energy storage systems (ESS), temperature controllers, and timer-based controls.

Key Requirements

1 Software classification (Class A, B, C)
2 Class A: No special safety requirements
3 Class B: Single fault protection with self-tests
4 Class C: Multiple fault protection for special hazards
5 Table H.2 fault control measures (7 categories)
6 CPU register testing and program flow monitoring
7 Memory protection (Flash CRC, RAM testing)
8 Clock verification and timing monitoring
9 I/O verification with reasonableness checks
10 FMEA/FMEDA risk assessment requirements
11 Third-party certification process (11 stages)
12 Fault tolerance time analysis
13 Documentation requirements (Table H.1)
14 EMC compliance (Level 3 for Class B/C)
