IEC 61508

Overview

IEC 61508 is the fundamental functional safety standard for electrical, electronic, and programmable electronic safety-related systems (E/E/PE). It provides a framework for safety lifecycle management and defines Safety Integrity Levels (SIL 1-4) for risk reduction.

Scope

Applies to all E/E/PE safety-related systems within safety-related systems comprising sensors, logic units, and final elements. Serves as the base standard for many industry-specific functional safety standards.
